al·de·hyde de·hy·dro·gen·ase (NAD+) (alґdə-hīd de-hiґdro-jən-ās) [EC 1.2.1.3] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidation of various aldehydes, using NAD+ as an electron acceptor, including the oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetate in the metabolism of ethanol. Multiple isozymes exist and deficiencies of the cytosolic or mitochondrial isozymes of liver result in accumulation of acetaldehyde; such deficiencies, particularly prevalent in East Asians, manifest as facial flushing, vasodilation, and tachycardia after ethanol ingestion. Called also acetaldehyde dehydrogenase.
