aminolevulinic acid

aminolevulinic acid
(ALA) ami·no·lev·u·lin·ic ac·id (ALA) (ə-me″no-lev″u-linґik) δ-aminolevulinic acid; an intermediate in the synthesis of heme, produced from succinyl-CoA and glycine. Two molecules of ALA are condensed to form porphobilinogen. Blood and urinary ALA levels are increased in lead poisoning, and urinary levels are increased in a variety of porphyrias.
