angiostrongyliasis

angiostrongyliasis
an·gio·stron·gy·li·a·sis (an″je-o-stron″jĭ-liґə-sis) infection by a nematode of the genus Angiostrongylus. In humans the usual species is the rat lungworm, A. cantonensis, and infection comes after eating contaminated raw snails, slugs, or paratenic hosts such as prawns or crabs. The larval worms migrate to the central nervous system and cause eosinophilic meningitis. In dogs the most common infecting species is A. vasorum and the worms are found in the pulmonary arteries.
