high-resolution banding

high-resolution banding
a banding technique in which cultured cells are blocked in the S phase of the cell cycle; the block is then released, and the culture is harvested when the greatest number of cells are in late prophase or prometaphase, revealing 800–1400 bands rather than the 400–600 seen in metaphase preparations. Used to detect precise breakpoints or small structural alterations. Called also prophase b.
