ointment base
a vehicle for the medicinal substances carried in an ointment. Ointment bases are divided into hydrocarbon bases, which are oleaginous; absorption bases, which include both anhydrous and water-in-oil emulsions and are able to incorporate aqueous solutions; water-removable (or water-washable) bases, which are oil-in-water emulsions; and water-soluble bases.
