One of the columnar epithelial cells of the inner layer of the enamel organ of a developing tooth, concerned with the formation of enamel matrix. SYN: enamel cell, enameloblast, ganoblast. [Early E. amel, enamel, + G. blastos, germ]

am·e·lo·blast (amґə-lo-blast″) [amelo- + -blast1] a cylindrical epithelial cell in the innermost layer of the enamel organ which takes part in the elaboration of the enamel prism. The ameloblasts cover the dental papilla. Called also adamantoblast, ganoblast, and enameloblast.
