6-aminopenicillanic acid
An important precursor in the synthesis of penicillin derivatives. By itself, it has no antibiotic activity.For structure, see under penicillin in which R = H. SYN: penicin.

6-ami·no·pen·i·cil·lan·ic ac·id (ə-me″no-pen″ĭ-səl-anґik) the active nucleus common to all penicillins; it may be obtained from cultures of Penicillium to which no side-chain precursors have been added. Substitution at the 6-amino position results in semisynthetic penicillins with a variety of antibacterial and pharmacologic characteristics.
