canalis nervi facialis
[TA] facial canal: a canal in the temporal bone for the facial nerve, beginning in the internal acoustic meatus and passing anterolaterally dorsal to the vestibule of the internal ear for about 2 mm. Turning sharply backward at the genu of the facial canal, it runs along the medial wall of the tympanic cavity, then turns inferiorly and reaches the exterior of the petrous part of the temporal bone at the stylomastoid foramen. Called also canal for facial nerve, fallopian aqueduct or canal, and aqueduct of Fallopius.
