[TA] ambient cistern: a sheetlike curved layer of subarachnoid space extending from the cisterna quadrigeminalis and partially encircling the midbrain on each side, connecting with the cisterna interpeduncularis. The term is sometimes used to denote the combination of the sheetlike extensions and the cisterna quadrigeminalis.
