neurons in the ventrolateral area of the medulla oblongata, ventral to the nucleus ambiguus, partially interspersed with the lateral reticular nucleus, and extending rostrally toward the facial nucleus; they provide essential rhythmic action potentials for respiratory function and constitute a respiratory center.
