glyoxylate cycle

glyoxylate cycle
a metabolic pathway by which certain microorganisms and plants convert fat to carbohydrate; its enzymes are contained in microbodies known as glyoxysomes. It is a modification of the tricarboxylic acid cycle but differs in that two auxiliary enzymes (isocitratase and malate synthetase) are used and two molecules of acetyl coenzyme A instead of one are required.
