a highly contagious acute disease of chickens, caused by the infectious bursal disease virus, characterized by edema and swelling of the cloacal bursa, soiled wet feathers, whitish watery diarrhea, listlessness, and trembling, progressing to extreme kidney damage and damage of the bursa of Fabricius, with resulting immunosuppression that can be fatal. Called also Gumboro d. and infectious avian nephrosis.
