thiazide diuretics

thiazide diuretics
a group of synthetic compounds that cause diuresis by altering electrolyte reabsorption at the distal tubules and increase urinary excretion of sodium and chloride in approximately equal amounts; they are used to treat edema, hypertension, and diabetes insipidus. The class of drugs is sometimes extended to include compounds which act like thiazide diuretics but are chemically dissimilar.
