DNA-directed RNA polymerase
DNA-di·rect·ed RNA po·lym·er·ase (dĭ-rekґtəd pə-limґər-ās) [EC 2.7.7.6] any of the enzymes of the transferase class that catalyze the template-directed step-by-step addition of ribonucleotides to the 3′ end of a growing RNA chain, using a single-stranded DNA template. The reaction is important in the flow of information from DNA to proteins. Prokaryotes have a single such polymerase, while eukaryotes have three: type I transcribes most ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes; type II synthesizes messenger (mRNA), some small nuclear (snRNA), and many small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA) molecules; and type III transcribes the genes for one species of rRNA, for transfer RNA (tRNA), and for various small RNA molecules. Called also RNA polymerase.
