human monocytic ehrlichiosis
(HME) a type of ehrlichiosis in humans, seen in the United States, Europe, and Africa, caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis and transmitted by the ticks Amblyomma americanum and Dermacentor variabilis. It involves predominantly fixed tissue mononuclear phagocytes and is characterized by flulike symptoms with leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, ranging in severity from asymptomatic to severe or occasionally fatal.
