An enzyme of the liver that catalyzes the hydrolysis of l-arginine to l-ornithine and urea; a key enzyme of the urea cycle. A deficiency of a. leads to arginemia. SYN: canavanase.

ar·gi·nase (ahrґjĭ-nās) [EC 3.5.3.1] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the hydrolysis of arginine to form ornithine and urea, which is the last step of the urea cycle. In mammals there are two isoforms, arginase 1, expressed mainly in the liver and in macrophages, and arginase 2, expressed mainly in extrahepatic tissues.
