apoptotic protease activating factor 1
(Apaf-1) a cytoplasmic protein that is activated by cytochrome c> (released from mitochondria) and deoxyadenosine triphosphate (dATP); it in turn binds to and activates caspase 9, initiating the apoptotic cascade.
