formate dehydrogenase

formate dehydrogenase
for·mate de·hy·dro·gen·ase (forґmāt de-hiґdro-jən-ās) [EC 1.2.1.2] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidation of formate to CO2, using NAD+ as an electron acceptor. The reaction occurs in bacteria but not in mammals. The fact that bacteria containing the enzyme (e.g., Escherichia coli) produce gas in mixed acid fermentations, and those that do not form the enzyme (e.g., Shigella) produce acid but no gas, is the basis for a test for the identification of Enterobacteriaceae.
