heme oxy·gen·ase (de·cy·cliz·ing) (hēm okґsĭ-jən-ās de-siґkli-zing) [EC 1.14.99.3] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the cleavage of heme to form biliverdin, a step in heme catabolism.
