filter hybridization

filter hybridization
any of various methods, e.g., Southern blotting, dot blotting, for detection of a specific nucleic acid sequence by immobilizing a population of single-stranded nucleic acids on a filter, exposing it to a specific labeled single-stranded nucleic acid probe, then washing off the unbound probe to reveal the location on the filter of hybrid double-stranded molecules.
