ballismus
A type of involuntary movement affecting the proximal limb musculature, manifested as jerking, flinging movements of the extremity; caused by a lesion of or near the contralateral subthalamic nucleus. Usually only one side of the body is involved, resulting in hemiballismus. SYN: ballism. [G. ballismos, a jumping about]

bal·lis·mus (bə-lizґməs) [Gr. ballismos a jumping about, dancing] violent flinging dyskinetic movements caused by contractions of the proximal limb muscles as a result of destruction of the subthalamic nucleus or its fiber connections, sometimes affecting only one side of the body (hemiballismus). Called also ballism.
