selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor

selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor
(NRI) any of a group of compounds that elevate the extracellular level of norepinephrine in the central nervous system by inhibiting its reuptake into the synapse via the presynaptic norepinephrine transporter, but that have only weak or no effects on neuronal uptake of serotonin and dopamine; used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and depression. NOTE: SNRI is sometimes used as an abbreviation, but is confusing since it also is used for serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.
