microsatellite instability

microsatellite instability
(MSI) the presence of unusual microsatellite lengths in an individual, caused by defects in the DNA mismatch repair genes; it has been identified as a marker for a variety of cancers, both hereditary, such as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, and sporadic. The phenotype is sometimes referred to as replication error–positive.
