layer of rods and cones
the layer of the stratum nervosum retinae situated between the stratum pigmentosum and the external limiting membrane, comprising the sensitive elements of the retina, the cones, containing a visual pigment, iodopsin, and the rods, containing visual purple, or rhodopsin. In official terminology, called stratum segmentorum externorum et internorum retinae [TA]. See also retina.
