partial lipodystrophy

partial lipodystrophy
a condition usually seen in girls younger than age 10, characterized by a symmetrical loss of subcutaneous fat, generally beginning on the face and gradually extending to the chest, neck, back, and upper extremities, giving the lower part of the body an appearance of adiposity of the buttocks, thighs, and legs. Some affected patients develop insulin-resistant diabetes mellitus, hypertriglyceridemia, and renal disease. Called also Barraquer or Simons disease and progressive or progressive partial l.
