nodular circumscribed lipomatosis: formation of multiple circumscribed or encapsulated lipomas in subcutaneous tissue. When these are distributed symmetrically around the neck, the condition is called multiple symmetric lipomatosis or Madelung disease. A variety in which the lipomas press against nerves and become painful is called adiposis dolorosa.
