Mansonella perstans

Mansonella perstans
a species up to 8 cm long found in tropical regions of the Americas and Africa, transmitted by biting flies of genus Culicoides. Adult worms inhabit pleural and peritoneal tissues, while larval forms (microfilariae) are found in the bloodstream. Although considered to be nonpathogenic, it occasionally causes symptoms, including eosinophilia, abdominal and pectoral pain, edema, fever, and hepatosplenomegaly. See perstans filariasis, under filariasis. Formerly classified as part of genera Acanthocheilonema and Dipetalonema.
