renal papillary necrosis an accompaniment of acute pyelonephritis, most often seen in diabetics, characterized by necrosis of the renal papillae of one or both kidneys, with sharp demarcation between necrotic and living tissue. Called also necrotizing papillitis and necrotizing renal papillitis.
