glucagon-like peptide

glucagon-like peptide
(GLP) either of two intestinal peptide hormones (GLP-1 and GLP-2) secreted by the L cells in response to ingestion of nutrients, especially carbohydrates and fat-rich meals. GLP-1 inhibits gastric emptying, food intake, and glucagon secretion and stimulates insulin secretion and pancreatic islet proliferation; GLP-2 inhibits antral motility and gastric acid secretion, induces crypt cell proliferation, enhances intestinal epithelial barrier function, stimulates intestinal hexose transport, and inhibits short-term control of food intake.
