- 1-phos·pha·ti·dyl·ino·si·tol phos·pho·di·es·ter·ase (fos″fə-ti″dəl-ĭ-noґsĭ-tol fos″fo-di-esґtər-ās) former official nomenclature for a phospholipase C specific for phosphoinositides, catalyzing the cleavage of a diacylglycerol residue from 1-phosphatidylinositol. It is part of a mechanism for mobilization of calcium in response to hormones; it is activated by hormonal binding via a G protein and begins the cycle of phosphoinositide metabolism. It can also play a role in the liberation of arachidonic acid from phosphatidylinositol. NOTE: While this enzyme has officially been renamed phosphatidylinositol diacylglycerol-lyase [EC 4.6.1.13], that name and number cover only the bacterial enzyme. The enzyme activity in animals has been determined instead to be part of the activity of the enzyme phosphoinositide phospholipase C (q.v.).
