microsatellite polymorphism

microsatellite polymorphism
the existence of different numbers of tandem repeating units in microsatellites of different individuals; they can be detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and are used extensively as markers, as in genetic linkage and mapping studies, kinship and paternity testing, forensic identification, and analyses of populations. Called also short tandem repeat p.
