pneumococcus polysaccharide any of a large number of polysaccharides derived from the capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae; more than 80 immunologically distinct types have been identified and form the basis of pneumococcal typing. The structure of some is known: Type 1 is a polymer of trisaccharide units containing galacturonic acids; Type 2 is a polymer of glucose; Type 3 is a high molecular weight polymer of glucose and glucuronic acid units (cellobiuronic acid); and Type 8 consists of glucose and glucuronic acid units alternating with glucosyl-galactose residues.
