transport protein

transport protein
a protein that binds to a substance and provides a transport system for it, either in the plasma or across a plasma membrane (see facilitated diffusion, under diffusion). Some are specific for one substance, such as a hormone, and others bind to several different substances. The term is sometimes used specifically for proteins that bind other proteins.
