radix cranialis nervi accessorii

radix cranialis nervi accessorii
[TA] cranial root of accessory nerve: the nerve rootlets originating from the nucleus ambiguus and emerging from the side of the medulla oblongata; although they are part of the vagus nerve, they are so named because they were originally considered to be part of the accessory nerve. They join briefly with the spinal root of the accessory nerve to form the trunk of accessory nerve; upon exiting the jugular foramen, they split from the spinal part, immediately unite with the vagus nerve, and are distributed to the soft palate, constrictors of the pharynx, and the larynx. Called also pars vagalis nervi accessorii [TA alternative].
