cogwheel rigidity
rigidity of a muscle that gives way in a series of little jerks upon being passively stretched, analogous to the ratcheting movement when a spring-loaded rod drops into the successive notches of a cog. Called also cogwheel phenomenon or sign and Negro phenomenon or sign.
