signal sequence

signal sequence
targeting sequence a sequence of 15 to 30 amino acids occurring at the N-terminal end of the precursors of secretory proteins; it is required for transport of the protein across the membrane of the rough endoplasmic reticulum into the cisternae, where it is immediately cleaved off by an endopeptidase. Called also leader s. and signal peptide.
