a device that analyzes the chemical composition of a substance either by passing infrared light through a specimen and characterizing its absorption spectrum or by measuring the amount of infrared light emitted by excited atoms or molecules in a specimen; infrared light is emitted or absorbed in a given band in proportion to the concentration of the molecule characterized by the band.
