vegetative state

vegetative state
a condition of profound nonresponsiveness in a state of apparent wakefulness, usually due to widespread lesions of the cerebral cortex and thalamus. Awareness of the self or of the environment is completely absent and there is no evidence of purposeful behavior; sleep/wake cycles occur, hypothalamic and brainstem autonomic functions are at least partially preserved, and stereotypic responses such as yawning and chewing are present.
