stasis syndrome

stasis syndrome
overgrowth of bacteria within the small intestine resulting from a variety of conditions causing stasis. The most common causes are disturbances to intestinal motility or decreased acid secretion; it may also be caused by structural abnormalities such as diverticula, fistulae between the colon and small intestine, or chronic obstruction. Characteristics include malabsorption of vitamin B12, steatorrhea, and anemia. Called also bacterial overgrowth s., blind loop s., and stagnant loop s.
