hypo-osmotic swelling test
(for viability of sperm) a sperm sample is put into a hypo-osmotic solution; spermatozoa with normal plasma membranes should undergo swelling and curling of their tails. If less than 50 per cent of the spermatozoa show this change, the sample is abnormal.
