tet·ro·do·tox·ism (tet″ro-do-tokґsiz-əm) [Tetraodon + toxin] 1. the most severe form of ichthyosarcotoxism, produced by ingestion of puffer fish or other animals containing tetrodotoxin; symptoms include malaise, dizziness, and tingling around the mouth, which may be followed within a short time by ataxia, convulsions, respiratory paralysis, and death. Called also fugu poisoning and puffer or puffer fish poisoning. 2. poisoning from tetrodotoxin after being bitten or stung by an animal such as the blue-ringed octopus. Defs. 1 and 2 called also tetraodontoxism.
