staphylococcal toxin

staphylococcal toxin
a mixture of exotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus. There are four chemically and serologically distinct hemolysins, called α, β, γ, and δ, variously having dermonecrotic activity (α-hemolysin), sphingomyelinase activity (β-hemolysin), necrotizing activity (γ-hemolysin), and leukocidin activity (δ-hemolysin). Other toxins produced are leukocytal and exfoliative (causing scalded skin syndrome). Strains of S. aureus also produce five serologically distinct enterotoxins: types A and D are major factors in staphylococcal food poisoning.
