red cell utilization
(RCU) the fraction of iron leaving the blood plasma that is incorporated in circulating red blood cells; iron-59 bound to the patient's own transferrin is administered, and the red cell utilization is calculated as: (radioactive iron/mL blood at 10–14 days) ч (extrapolated radioactive iron/mL blood at time zero) Ч 100 per cent.
