closing volume

closing volume
(CV) the difference between the closing capacity and the residual volume; the volume of gas still in the lungs in excess of the residual volume when dependent small airways are assumed to have closed. Seen in the test results (such as with the single breath nitrogen washout test) near the end of the vital capacity period as a sharp rise in nitrogen concentration, indicating that most gas at this point is coming from the upper lung areas. It has sometimes been analyzed for indications of early lung disease.
