di·hy·dro·tach·ys·te·rol (di-hi″dro-tak-isґtə-rol) [USP] an analogue of ergocalciferol produced upon irradiation of ergosterol; it raises serum calcium levels via stimulation of intestinal absorption of calcium and mobilization of the mineral from bone in patients lacking renal function or parathyroid hormone. It is used in the treatment of chronic hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, rickets, and osteodystrophy associated with various medical conditions such as chronic renal failure and hypoparathyroidism, and the treatment and prophylaxis of postoperative and idiopathic tetany. Administered orally.
