elec·tro·nar·co·sis (e-lek″tro-nahr-koґsis) application of an electric current to the brain to alter the level of consciousness, without inducing convulsions; formerly used in the treatment of schizophrenia, but found to be both less effective and more likely to cause side effects than electroconvulsive therapy.
