E. equisetina (family Gnetaceae). Ma Huang; the plant source for the alkaloid ephedrine. Indigenous to China and India, it is 0.75 to over 1% ephedrine; also contains some pseudoephedrine.

Ephed·ra (ə-fedґrə) [Gr. epi upon + hedra seat] a genus of low, branching shrubs of the family Gnetaceae, indigenous to China and India. E. equisetiґna Bunge., E. siniґca Stapf., E. vulgaґris, and other species (all called ma huang in China) are sources of ephedrine.
