her·maph·ro·dism (.)hər-'maf-rə-.diz-əm n HERMAPHRODITISM Her·maph·ro·di·tus (.)hər-.maf-rə-'dīt-əs Greek mythological character. Hermaphroditus was the son of Hermes and Aphrodite and renowned for his beauty. A fountain nymph became enamored of him and asked the gods to unite her with him in one body. The result was a creature who was half man and half woman.
