25-hy·droxy·cho·le·cal·cif·er·ol 'twent-ē-'fīv-hī-.dräk-sē-.kō-lə-(.)kal-'sif-ə-.rȯl, -.rōl n a sterol C27H44O2 that is a metabolite of cholecalciferol formed in the liver, is the circulating form of vitamin D, and has some activity in maintaining calcium homeostasis and preventing rickets

25-hy·droxy·cho·le·cal·cif·e·rol (hi-drok″se-ko″lə-kal-sifґə-rol) the major metabolite synthesized from cholecalciferol (vitamin D3>) in the liver and occurring in the serum; it is the precursor of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol. See also table at cholecalciferol. Called also calcifediol, calcidiol, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3>.
