hy·per·am·mo·ne·mia (hi″pər-am″o-neґme-ə) elevated levels of ammonia or its compounds in the blood, such as in congenital conditions including disturbances in the urea cycle, or in severe liver disease; some cases are due to an inherited metabolic disorder. Symptoms include lethargy, vomiting, apnea, and irritability, progressing to encephalopathy with seizures and coma. Called also ammonemia.
